Media Monitoring Highlights

CNN, The Washington Post, Al Jazeera, AFP,  RFA, AP, Bangladesh’s The Independent all reported that an estimated 18,500 people have crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar since the latest outbreak of violence on 25 August. Thousands more are still trapped in no-man’s land between the two countries according to IOM. They quoted IOM’s Shanjukta Sahany, Peppi Siddiq and Chris Lom.

Media Monitoring Highlights

AFP, BBC, CNN, Reuters, AP, Voice of America and The Guardian reported that African and European leaders on Monday backed proposals to screen asylum seekers in Africa as a way to prevent thousands from taking perilous journeys across the Mediterranean. All cited IOM figures. UN Radio also spoke to IOM’s Leonard Doyle who said African states that are transit countries need the EU's help if the issue of irregular migration is to be resolved.
